A few short entries on some of the city's major water polo personalities in alphabetical order. The set is far from complete, hoping to expand as more information is found.

Bartalis Károly
(1969-)
He was born in 1969, and quikcly became one of the key figures of local, soon national, water polo, and with the national team he played alongside many of the big names of the 1980s.
His talents meant that the Dinamo club from Bucharest, together with Ferenc Miklos Toth (see his biographical notes further below), co-opted him in their team. In 1984 they won a silver at the national championship in Romania. Karoly also played many matches in the national team, too.
He is still very active in water sports: as a swimming and water polo coach, he is relentlessly working with the juniors in his home town. He also plays in the Transylvanian Owls "oldboys" club, together with many other big names of this city's water polo.
S-a născut în 1969, devenint rapid unul din personajele cheie al polo-ului local, apoi curând naţional şi a jucat în selecţionata României împreună cu alte mari nume ale anilor 1980.
Talentele sale au fost remarcate şi de clubul Dinamo, aşa că împreună cu Toth Ferenc Miklos (dansul fiind prezentat mai jos) a jucat multe meciuri, câştigând şi un argint în 1984 la campionatele naţionale. A jucat şi în selecţionata României la multe turnee.
În prezent este tot activ în sporturile pe apă, ca antrenor de înot şi de polo. Joacă activ şi în echipa "old boys" Transylvanian Owls (Bufniţe Ardelene).
1969-ben született, és hamarosan a helyi majd az országos szinten játszott vízilabda egyik kulcsfigurája lett. A román válogatottban játszott a 80-as években, azon évtized több más nagy nevével együtt.
Tehetségét a bukaresti Dinamo is felismerte, így a lentebb bemutatott Tóth Ferenc Miklóssal is sok meccset játszott a Dinamo színeiben, 1984-ben ezüst érmet nyerve az országos bajnokságon.
Jelenleg is a vízisportokban rendkívül aktív, úszó és vízilabda edzőként is. Ugyanakkor aktív játékos is a helyi "öregfiúk" Transylvanian Owls (azaz Erdélyi Baglyok) nevet viselő csapatában.
Fodor Bertalan
(1922-2016)
He was born in 1922, and in the 1940s he was one of the best water polo players of the town.
He began to swim at the age of six, then switched to water polo and won ten silver medals with the country's various teams.
He played together with the great names like Attila Kelemen , János Bordy , Károly Rettegi , Ferenc Simon, Gábor Nagy , Gyula Deák and many others. The great László Daróczi was their coach and the Vointa pool was the scene of the matches that attracted huge crowds on a regular basis.
He obtained his baccalaureate in Budapest, then, due to his Jewish origin, from 1939 until the end of the war he was banned from sport and also sent to labour camp.
After the end of the war, in just two years he returned to his peak form and already played in the big league. But as the Fodor brothers had a furniture shop in the city centre, the communists labelled him, too a kulak, and was again banned from sport - but fortunately he could play in Bucharest.
In 1964 he emigrated to the USA, more precisely settled in New York, where he owned a furniture upholstery shop for almost 30 years. He played water polo and swam as a member of the hugely famous New York Athletic Club, winning countless competitions in his age group. He most recently visited them in September 2011 during one of the club reunions.
S-a născut în 1922, şi în anii '40 a fost unul dintre cei mai de seamă poloişti din oraş.
A început să facă nataţie la vârsta de şase ani, apoi a trecut la polo pe apă, câştigând zece medalii de argint cu diferite echipe din ţară.
A jucat împreună cu cele mai mari nume, ca Attila Kelemen , János Bordy , Károly Rettegi , Ferenc Simon, Gábor Nagy , Gyula Deák şi mulţi alţii. Marele László Daróczi a fost antrenorul lor, şi meciurile se desfăşurau la ştrandul Voinţa, atrăgând în mod regular mulţimea.
Şi-a luat bacalaureatul la Budapesta, dar din cauza originii evreieşti i s-a interzis să facă sport din 1939 până la terminarea râzboiului, şi a fost trimis şi în tabără de muncă. După terminarea războiului în numai doi ani şi-a revenit la forma sa competiţională şi a jucat in echipa mare.
Dar din cauză că fraţii Fodor aveau un magazin de mobilă în centrul oraşului, comuniştii de atunci i-au etichetat kulak şi iar i s-a interzis sportul. Din fericire, a putut să joace la Bucureşti.
În 1964 a emigrat în SUA, mai precis s-a stabilit în New York, unde timp de aproape 30 de ani a fost proprietarul unui magazin de tapiţerie. A jucat polo şi a înotat ca membru la faimosul New York Athletic Club, câştigând numeroase competiţii în grupa sa de vârstă. Cel mai cecent a vizitat clubul în septembrie 2011, cu ocazia unei reuniuni ale clubului.
1922-ben született, az 1940-es években Marosvásárhely egyik legjobb vízilabdázója volt.
Hat évesen kezdett úszni, később az úszásról vízilabdára tért át, tíz ezüstérmet szerzett az ország különböző csapataival. Együtt játszott vele Kelemen Attila, Bordy János, Rettegi Károly, Simon Ferenc, Nagy Pocó Gábor, Deák Gyula és sokan mások a nagy nevek közül.
A nagy Daróczi László volt az edzőjük és a Vointa strandon zajlottak a nagy tömegeket vonzó meccsek. Budapesten érettségizett, de 1939-től a háború végéig zsidó származása miatt nem sportolhatott és munkatáborba is került. A háború befejezése után két év alatt visszatért régi formájába és mar a nagycsapatban játszott.
Ekkor azonban az akkori kommunisták kuláknak bélyegezték, mivel a főtéren a Fodor testvéreknek bútor boltjuk volt - szerencsére Bukarestben játszhatott, de otthon eltiltották a sporttól. 1964-ben Amerikába, pontosabban New York-ba vándorolt ki, ahol közel 30 évig kárpitos üzlete volt.
Ott a fogalommá vált New York Athletic Club-nál játszott és úszott korcsoportjában, tobb versenyt sorra nyerve. A klub találkozója alkalmából 2011 szeptemberében ismét ott járt.
Nagy "Pocó" Gábor
(1931-2014)
Five times national water polo champion with CCA team (1952-'56), second place with hometown's Progresul team (1951). National goalgetter: 1954-'55-'56, national team's centerhalf: 1951-'56, and its team captain between 1954-'56.
CCA won the national championships five times in a row. Their starting line-up, all seven of them were also members of the national selection. Three of them - Deutsch, Hoszpodar, and Nagy, were the foundation of the national team and CCA. During their run for the championships they lost only one single game in five years... and at least 80% of our victories were by 4-5 goals.
Member of the Olympic team in 1956, also with Zoltán Hoszpodár was member of Olympic "B" team in the match after the games. Due to political reasons, together with József Deutsch and Ernest Patrichi, were kicked out of the 1952 Olympic team two days prior to its departure to Helsinki!
In 1956, at the age of 23 and a half, he received American asylum together with Zoltán Hoszpodár, József Deutsch, János Bordy. He was triple American water polo champion and three times in All-American Selection with János Bordy.
Also, he was four times national swimming champion and twice national ice hockey champion (1950-1951), also played basketball in the teams Kollégium, CFR and hometown's Progresul team.
We would also add that Gabor graduated at the USC (University of Southern California) in film studies and was an active producer and director. He directed a water polo documentary film, too, with the legendary Burt Lancaster as narrator.
De cinci ori campion naţional de polo pe apă cu echipa CCA (1952-'56), pe locul doi cu echipa Progresul de acasă (1951).
CCA a câştigat campionatul naţional de cinci ori pe rând. Între pimii şapte, toţi erau şi în selecţionata naţională. Trei dintre ei, Deutsch, Hoszpodar şi Nagy, erau membri de bază în echipa naţională şi în CCA. În timpul turneelor pentru campionatul naţional, ei au pierdut un singur joc în cinci ani. Cel puţin 80% din victoriile lor au fost cu 4-5 goluri diferenţă.
Dânsul a fost şi golghetterul naţional în 1954-'55-'56, mijlocaş central în selecţionata naţională între 1951-'56 şi căpitanul echipei naţionale între 1954-'56.
Membrul selecţionatei Olimpice în 1956. La meciul de după jocurile Olimpice, a fost membru în echipa "B" împreună cu Zoltán Hoszpodár. Din motive politice, a fost dat afară din echipa Olimpică din 1952 împreună cu József Deutsch şi Ernest Patrichi, cu numai două zile înainte de pornirea spre Helsinki!
În 1956, la vârsta de 23 ani şi jumate, a primit azil politic în Statele Unite, împreună cu Zoltán Hoszpodár, József Deutsch, János Bordy.
A fost de trei ori campion naţional al Americii în polo pe apă şi de trei ori în selecţionata All-American împreună cu János Bordy.
Totodată, a fost şi campion naţional la înot şi de două ori campion naţional în hochei pe gheaţă (1950-51), a jucat şi baschet în echipele Kollégium, CFR şi echipa Progresul din oraşul natal.
Am mai dori să adăugăm, că Gabor a absolvit la USC (University of Southern California), unde a studiat la facultatea de film, şi a fost un producător şi regizor activ. A realizat și un film documentar despre polo pe apă, la care naratorul a fost legendarul Burt Lancaster.
Ötszörös országos vízilabda bajnok a CCA csapatával (1952-'56), második helyezett az otthoni Progresul csapatával (1951).
CCA ötször egymás után megnyerte az országos bajnokságot. A keretben az első hétből mindenki a válogatottban is játszott. Hárman közülük, Deutsch, Hoszpodar és Nagy, a vűlogatott és a CCA alap tagjai is voltak. Az országos bajnokságok turnéin egyetlen meccset veszítettek el öt év alatt. Győzelmeik legalább 80%-át 4-5 gólos különbséggel nyerték.
Országos gólkirály: 1954-'55-'56, a nemzeti válogatott centerhalfja: 1951-'56, és csapatkapitanya: 1954-'56.
Olimpiai válogatott tagja: 1956. Hoszpodár Zoltánnal tagjai voltak az Olimpiai "B" válogatottnak a játékok utáni mecsen. Politikai okok miatt Deutsch Józseffel, Ernest Patrichi-val az 1952-es Olimpiai csapatból kidobták mindössze két nappal a Helsinki-be való indulás előtt!
1956-ban, 23 és fél évesen megkapta az amerikai menedékjogot Hoszpodár Zoltánnal, Deutsch Józseffel és Bordy Jánossal.
Háromszoros Amerikai vízipoló bajnok és háromszoros All-American Selection Bordy Jánossal.
Emellett négyszeres országos úszóbajnok volt és kétszeres országos jégkorong bajnok (1950-51), es kosárlabdázott is a Kollégium, CFR és az otthoni Progresul csapataiban.
Még hozzátennénk, hogy az USC-n (University of Southern California) végezte a film szakot és aktív producer és rendező volt. Egy vízilabda témájú dokumentumfilmet is alkotott, amelynek narrátora a legendás Burt Lancaster volt.
Simon Ferenc
(1927-2005)
He had 35 years of continuous activity in the pool, 230 times in the national team until 1960, three Olympic games, one European Championship (1954, Torino). Member of the world selection in 1955 (scoring four goals in the “A” team), three times on the podium at World Youth meets. Received special award from the International Olympic Committee.
He had been living (and started swimming at the age of five) near the Vointa pool. His sports career started in the MSE team, which later changed to RATA, Dinamo, Progresul, ILEFOR then Muresul. During his military service in 1949, he played water polo with Dinamo Bucharest.
He was national swimming champion between 1945 and 1947 (100m backstroke, 200m freestyle).
In summer 1946 he played for the first time in the Romanian national team, at the Balkan Games in Split.
In 1952 he played at the Helsinki Olympic Games, in 1956 at Melbourne (8th place) and in Rome in 1960 (5th place).
In 1953 he also became certified coach, for almost 20 years he was water polo coach for the Muresul team, having produced many famous players like Csiszér II Miklós, Traian Fleseriu, Ferenc Fülöp.
He used to go to bed at 9PM, and at 6AM was already swimming kilometres after kilometres. At the age of 70, he still used to swim regularly, and had a lifetime free pass at the local indoors pool.
A avut 35 de ani de activitate continuă în bazin, a jucat de 230 de ori în selecționata națională până în 1960, de trei ori la jocurile Olimpice, o dată la Campionatul European (1954, Torino). Membru al selecționatei mondiale în 1955 (marcând patru goluri in prima echipă), de trei ori pe podium la întâlnirile Mondiale de Tineret. A primit premiul special al Comitetului Internațional Olimpic.
Trăia lânga ștrandul Voința, unde a început să înoate la vârsta de cinci ani. Cariera sa a început în echipa MSE, care mai târziu a devenit RATA, Dinamo, Progresul, ILEFOR apoi Mureșul. În timpul serviciului militar în 1949, a jucat la Dinamo București.
A fost campion național la înot între 1945 și 1947 (100m spate, 200m craul).
În vara anului 1946 a jucat pentru prima dată în selecționata României, la Jocurile Balcanice din Split.
În 1952 a participat la Jocurile Olimpice de la Helsinki, în 1956 la cele de la Melbourne (locul 8), apoi in 1960 la cele din Roma (locul 5).
În 1953, a devenit și antrenor calificat, timp de aproape 20 de ani a fost antrenor de polo la echipa Mureșul, și a produs mulți jucători faimoși, ca Miklós Csiszér II., Traian Fleseriu, Ferenc Fülöp.
Obișnuia să se culce la 9 seara, și la 6 dimineața deja înota kilometru după kilometru. Și la vârsta de 70 de ani înota în mod regulat, și avea bilet gratis pe viață la piscina din oraș.
35 esztendônyi folytonos tevékenység a medencében, 1960-ig 230-szor játszott a válogatottban, három olimpián és egy Európa-bajnokságon vett részt (1954, Torino). A világválogatott tagja volt (1955, négy gólt is dobott az első csapatban), háromszor dobogós helyezés Világifjúsági találkozókon. A Nemzetközi Olimpiai Bizottság különkitüntetését kapta meg.
A volt Vointa strand mellett lakott és ott kezdett úszni hatéves korában. Az MSE csapatánál kezdett sportolni, amelyből RATA, Dinamo, Progresul, ILEFOR, majd Muresul lett. 1949-ben, a katonai szolgálat letöltése idején, a bukaresti Dinamo színeiben sportolt.
1945-1947 között országos úszóbajnok volt (100 méteres hát, 200 méter sprint).
A román vízilabda-válogatottba 1946 nyarán szerepelt először, a spliti Balkáni Játékokon.
1952-ben Helsinkiben vett részt élete elsô olimpiáján, majd 1956-ban Melbourne-ben (8. hely), 1960-ban Rómában (5. hely). 1953-ban edzôi oklevelet is szerzett. Közel húsz évig volt a Muresul vízilabda-csapatának edzôje, sok játékos, mint Csiszér II Miklós, majd Fleseriu Traian, Fülöp Ferenc került ki a keze alól.
Este kilenc órakor feküdt le, reggel hatkor már rótta a kilométereket. 70 éves korán túl is rendszeresen úszott, a fedett medencéhez élete végéig szabad belépôje volt.
Dr. Bordy János
(1938-2021)
He was born in 1938, and the first encounter with the water was when, at the old Vointa pool near the place locals know as the Turbina, (Bajusz) Kiss Andor threw him in the water and without knowing how to swim, he made it to the side of the pool. In 1953 he played water polo for the Progresul for one year.
He graduated from the Reformed College in 1954. In ’54-’55, Janos played for the Dinamo youth team in Bucharest and they were 3rd to C.C.A. and Progresul Tg.Mures. In 1954 he became a member of the National Team, and between ’54 – ’56 played 30-35 international games. Four of them from the ’56 Romanian Olympic Water Polo Team, Nagy, Hoszpodar, Deutsch and Bordy defected from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics together with 36 Hungarians and came to the U.S.A.
They toured the U.S. and did exhibitions at various cities. With the help of Dr. Edward Teller, the world famous physicist, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley and played water polo for 4 years. They were always second to the University of Southern California where Nagy and Deutsch and 2 other Olympians played and he was the only Olympian playing for Berkeley.
He also became a member of the San Francisco Olympic Club and we won the American National Championship in ’57 and ’59.
In 1961 he went to Medical School at Stanford University in California and graduated in 1966 with highest honours, then served in the U.S. Navy from ’67-’69 as a Medical Officer. In ’69 he returned to Stanford for 3 years where he finished an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency in ’72.
In 1977, he joined Kaiser Permanente at Redwood City, California where he was the Chief of the Orthopaedic Department for 30 years. During the past 7-8 years Janos has been refereeing water polo games for high schools and clubs. In 2010 he was inducted into the Olympic Club Hall of Fame along with Hoszpodar. He got married in ’59 and has 3 children and 8 grandchildren. He kept very close contact with Gábor Nagy, whose biography can be read below.
Dânsul s-a născut în 1938, primul contact cu apa l-a avut când (Bajusz) Kiss Andor l-a aruncat în apă şi a reuşit să ajungă la marginea bazinului Vointa de la Turbina. În 1953 a jucat polo pe apă la Progresul timp de un an.
A terminat liceul la Colegiul Reformat in 1954, şi a jucat în echipa de tineret Dinamo Bucureşti, fiind a treia echipă după C.C.A şi Progresul Târgu-Mureş. În 1954 a devenit şi membru în echipa naţională, între ’54 – ’56 jucând 30+35 de meciuri internaţionale.
Patru din echipa olimpică din 1956, Nagy, Hoszpodar, Deutsch şi Bordy au defectat în SUA, de la Jocurile Olimpice de la Melbourne, împreună cu alţi 36 maghiari.
Au făcut turnee in SUA şi demonstraţii in diferite oraşe. Cu ajutorul fizicianului de renume mondială, Dr. Edward Teller, a înrolat la Universitatea din California, Berkeley, şi a jucat polo timp de patru ani. Erau totdeauna pe locul doi după echipa Universităţii Californiei de Sud, unde Nagy şi Deutsch, plus încă doi jucători olimpici jucau - dânsul fiind singurul jucător olimpic care juca pentru Berkeley.
În 1961 a studiat la facultatea de medicină de la Universitatea Stanford din California, a absolvit în 1966 cu cele mai mari onoruri, apoi a servit în U.S. Navy între ’67-’69 ca ofiţer medical. În ’69 s-a întors la Stanford pentru trei ani, unde a terminat rezidenţa de chirurg ortopedic în 1972.
Din 1977, a fost şeful departamentului de chirurgie ortopedică de la Kaiser Permanente, în Redwood City, California. În ultimii 7-8 ani dânsul a fost arbitru la meciuri de polo pe apă la şcoli superioare şi cluburi.
A devenit şi membru la San Francisco Olympic Club, şi a câştigat campionatul naţional American în ’57 şi ’59. În 2010, a fost inclus în Olympic Club Hall of Fame împreună cu Hoszpodar. S-a căsătorit în ’59, are 3 copii şi 8 nepoţi. A ţinut legătură foarte apropiată cu Gabor Nagy, biografia dânsului se poate citi mai jos.
1938-ban született, a vízzel való első kontaktusa akkor volt, amikor (Bajusz) Kiss Andor bedobta a vízbe a Turbina melletti Vointa strandon, és noha nem tudott még úszni, kijutott a medence szélére. 1953-ban a helyi Progresul-nál vízilabdázott egy évet.
1954-ben végezte a Református Kollégiumot, '54-'55-ben a bukaresti Dinamo ifi csapatában játszott, harmadikok voltak a CCA és Progresul csapatai után. '54-ben a válogatott tagja lett, és '56-ig 30-35 nemzetközi meccsen játszott.
Négyen az '56-os román olimpiai csapatból, Nagy, Hoszpodár, Deutsch és Bordy az USA-ba disszidáltak a Melbourne-i Olimpiáról, 36 más magyarral együtt.
Ott turnéztak és több városban bemutatókat tartottak. Dr. Teller Ede, a vilaghírű fizikus segítségével a kaliforniai Berkeley egyetemen iratkozott be, és ott négy évet vízilabdázott. Mindig másodikak voltak a Dél-Kalifornia Egyetem csapata után, ahol Nagy, Deutsch és még két olimpikon játszott - Bordy János volt az egyedüli olimpikon, aki a Berkeley-nél vízilabdázott.
A San Francisco Olympic Club tagjává is vált, és az amerikai bajnokságot megnyerte '57 és '59-ben. 1961-ben a Stanford egyetem orvosi fakultására iratkozott be, '66-ban a legmagasabb kitüntetéssel végezve el ezt. Az amerikai haditengerészetben szolgált '67-'69 között mint orvos. '69-ben visszatért Stanford-ba három évre, és itt 1972-ben fejezte be ortopéd sebészi rezidenciáját.

Fülöp Ferenc
(1942-)
He started to swim at the age of five, with Andor Kiss, and since 1956 he has been official swimmer and water polo player. With the Junior 1 team, he won bronze in 1958, '59 and '60 at the nationals held at Lugos, Timisoara and Oradea.
In 1959, he was national champion in both 100m freestyle and backstroke. Between 1960-'62 he played in the senior team, together with Soli, Simon, Meder, Naska, Csiszer brothers, Veress and Both.
In 1960 he played in the most memorable water polo battle against CCA. Andor Kiss was the coach, Simon could not play and 6 players were eliminated, even the reserve Naska, too. Although they lost that match, they won the return match 6-3, playing with Tibor Jozsa and Jazsi Csutak.
Between 1960-1977, he had also been playing in the national water polo team and was member of the swimming national team, too.
Between 1962-1964, he was at Steaua Bucharest, winning silver at the nationals in 1964. In the team at that time played also Stefanescu, Firoiu, Szabó, Fülöp, Culineac, Alecsandrescu and Neacsu. As a swimmer, he is twice national champion and record holder, too, being the first swimmer from Tirgu Mures who swam 100m freestyle under one minute.
As a swimmer, he took part at the 1961 University World Championship in Sofia, achieving 16th place in 100m freestyle - and he also played water polo there. He was selected in the national team a total of 57 times, also played for ten years at Vointa Cluj, winning bronze five teams after Dinamo and Rapid, once a silver after Dinamo.
In 1964 he would have been the youngest player at the Tokyo Olympic Games, but as it happened in the case of the Helsinki games, too, he was not selected due to his Hungarian Jewish origins. In 1971 he was caught with hard currency, and because of this the Regime of that time did not allow him to go to the University World Championships held in Italy.
In 1974 with the B national team, as team captain, achieved a second place in Izmir, after the Serbs (i.e., Yugoslavs at that time).
In 1977 he returned home from Cluj, and led the Junior 1 and senior teams in Tirgu Mures. It is a historic curiosity, that in the team played also Ference Toth, whom he taught to swim at the age of five. As water polo coach, he worked at the Muresul club with a very strong team (e.g. Szabó Csaba, Méder, Szász, Kovács, Kis-Miki, Pancsó, Kiss, Ganea and many others).
As he graduated from the IEFS sport university, he could also return to teaching, as water polo gradually disappeared due to lack of funds. He switched to swimming, a sport in which he coached champions, too. At present, he is retired, master of two sports and his hobby is leg volleyball.
Dânsul a început înotul la vârsta de cinci ani la Andor Kiss, și din 1956 a fost înotător și poloist legitimat. Cu echipa de Juniori 1, a atins locul trei în 1958, 59 și 60 la campionatele naționale de la Lugoj, Timișoara și Oradea.
În 1959, a fost și campion național la 100m craul și spate. Între anii 1960-62, a jucat în echipa de seniori, împreună cu Soli, Simon, Meder, Naska, frații Csiszer, Veress și Both.
În 1960 a jucat în cea mai memorabilă luptă contra CCA, antrenorul fiind Andor Kiss. Simon nu a jucat și șase jucători au fost eliminați, chiar și Naska care a fost rezervă. Cu toate că au pierdut meciul, la retur au învins cu 6-3, în echipă fiind și Tibor Jozsa și Jazsi Csutak.
Între 1960-1977, dânsul a fost și membru al lotului național de polo și de înot. Între 1962 și 1964, a jucat la Steaua, fiind pe locul doi la campionatul național din 1964.
În acea echipă juca și Ștefănescu, Firoiu, Szabó, Fülöp, Culineac, Alecsandrescu și Neacșu. Ca înotător, a fost de două ori campion național și deținător de record, fiind primul din Târgu Mureș care a înotat 100m craul sub un minut.
A participat și la campionatul mondial universitar de înot din Sofia, ajungând la locul 16 în 100m craul - totodată a jucat și polo la acel campionat. A fost selecționat de 57 de ori în lotul național de polo, și a jucat zece ani la Voința Cluj, câștigând locul III de cinci ori după Dinamo și Rapid, și locul II o dată după Dinamo.
În 1964 ar fi fost cel mai tânăr jucător la jocurile Olimpice de la Tokio, dar cum s-a întâmplat și în cazul jocurilor de la Helsinki, nu a fost selectat din cauză că era evreu de etnie maghiară. În 1971 a fost prins cu valută, și nu i-au permis să se ducă la campionatul mondial universitar din Italia. În 1974, cu echipa națională B unde era și căpitan de echipă, s-a clasat la locul doi la Izmir, după sârbi (iugoslavi în acea vreme).
În 1977 s-a întors de la Cluj, și a condus echipa de juniori 1 și cea de seniori din Mureș. În echipă juca și Ferenc Toth, pe care l-a învățat să înoate la vârsta de cinci ani.
Ca antrenor de polo, a lucrat la clubul Mureșul, unde a fost o echipă foarte tare (de exemplu, Szabó Csaba, Méder, Szász, Kovács, Kis-Miki, Pancsó, Kiss, Ganea și mulți alții).
Pentru că a absolvit la facultatea de sport IEFS, s-a putut întoarce și la catedră, pentru că polo-ul pe apă treptat a dispărut în oraș din cauza lipsei de fonduri.
S-a orientat pe înot, un sport în care a produs și campioni. În prezent, este pensionar, maestru a două sporturi, și hobby-ul dânsului este volei de picior.
Öt éves korában kezdett úszni Kiss Andornál, majd 1956-tól leigazolt úszó és vízilabdázó.
Az Ifi 1 csapatal 1958-59-60-ban bronz érmes a Lugos, Temesvár és Váradon tartott országos bajnokságokon.
1959-ben úszó országos bajnok 100m gyorson és 100m háton. 1960-62 között a felnőtt csapatban játszott, amelyben Soli, Simon, Méder, Naska, Csiszér testvérek, Veress, Both is játszott.
1960-ban részt vett minden idők legnagyobb polús küzdelmében a CCA csapatával, Andor bácsi volt az edző, Simon nem jatszott és 6 játékost tiltottak le tőlük, még a tartalék Naskát is. Noha vesztettek, a visszavágón Józsa Tiborral, Csutak Jazsival 6-3-ra győztek.
1960-tól ugyanakkor az úszó és vízilabda vágotatottban is játszott 1977-ig. 1962-64 között a Steaua-nál úszott, 1964-ben másodikok voltak országos szinten. A csapatban akkor Stefanescu, Firoiu, Szabó, Fülöp, Culineac, Alecsandrescu és Neacsu játszott. Úszásban kétszeres országos bajnok és rekorder is, Vásárhelyen az első aki egy perc alatt 100 gyorsot úszott.
1961-ben Szófiában az Egyetemi Világbajnokságon mint úszó 16-ik 100 gyorson, és polósként is részt vett. Összesen 57-szer volt válogatott, ugyanakkor 10 évet jatszott a kolozsvári Vointa-nál, ötször voltak harmadikok a Dinamo és Rapid után, egyszer pedig másodikok a Dinamo után!
1964-ben a legfiatalabb játékos lett volna a tókiói olimpián, de mint Helsinki esetében is, nem vitték el magyar zsidó származása miatt. 1971-ben valutát találva nála, az akkori rezsim nem engedte ezért Olaszországba utazni az Egyetemi Világbajnokságra.
1974-ben a B válogatottal csapatkapitányként másodikok lettek az akkori jugoszlávok azaz szerbek után Izmirben.
1977-ben hazatért Kolozsváról, és átvette az Ifi 1-es és felnőtt csapatokat. Történelmi érdekesség, hogy nála játszott Tóth Ferenc is, akit öt éves korában ő tanított meg úszni.
Vízilabda edzőként a Muresul-nál dolgozott, egy kitűnő csapattal (pl. Szabó Csaba, Méder, Szász, Kovács, Kis-Miki, Pancsó, Kiss, Ganea és még sokan mások).
Mivel sport egyetemet (IEFS) végzett, visszatért a katedrára, sajnos a vízilabda fokozatosan megszűnt pénzhiány miatt. Áttért az úszásra, ahol bajnokot is nevelt.
Jelenleg nyudíjas, két sportág mestere, és hobbija a lábtenisz.

He was national champion ten times with the Dinamo club, where he played between 1983 and 2001.
During this period he was on the podium of the national championships in every single year, and won many times the Romania Cup, too.
In the A division, he played 600 matches, 135 matches as a member of the national team between 1991 and 2000.
At the 1993 European Championships in Sheffield he obtained fourth place, and in 1996 at the same championships in Malta, playing in the B group, he won third place.
Currently he is still very active in the world of water polo, and coaches the juniors of the local club Torpi and plays in the Transylvanian Owls oldboys team.
Dânsul a fost de zece ori campion național cu echipa de polo de la Dinamo, unde a jucat între 1983 și 2001. În această perioadă la campionatul național a fost pe podium în fiecare an, și a câștigat de multe ori și Cupa României.
În divizia A, a jucat 600 de meciuri, 135 de meciuri ca membru al selecționatei naționale între 1991 și 2000.
La Campionatele Europene de la Sheffield o obținut locul patru în 1993, apoi în 1996 la aceleați campionate de la Malta a luat locul trei, jucând în grupa B.
Și în prezent este foarte activ în polo, antrenând și juniorii de la clubul mureșean Torpi, totodată joacă în echipa oldboys Transylvanian Owls (Bufniţe din Transilvania).
Tízszer volt országos bajnok a Dinamo csapatával, ahol 1983-től 2001-ig játszott.
E periódusban minden évben az országos bajnokságon dobogós helyezést vívott ki, számtalan Románia Kupát is.
600 mérkőzést játszott az A divízióban, 135 mérkőzést a román válogatott tagjaként 1991 és 2000 között.
Az 1993-as Sheffield-i Európa Bajnokságon negyedik helyet ért el, majd 1996-ban a máltai EB-n harmadik helyet a B csoportban játszva.
Jelenleg is a vízilabdával szoros kapcsolatban áll, a marosvásárhelyi Torpi klub ifi játékosait edzi és a Transylvanian Owls azaz Erdélyi Baglyok oldboys csapatában játszik.
