Bucharest, Oradea, Cluj, Tîrgu Mures and Timișoara - these were the cities where the first water polo teams appeared in Romania, the teams were mostly composed of competitive swimmers.
In 1928, we find a mention of the first official match played between Oradea and Cluj.
1929: At Cluj, the first match between the local University's water polo team and the Maros Sport Egyesület (M.S.E.) Tîrgu Mureş took place, with a final score of 8:6.
1933: The National Swimming Championship at Bucharest this year also included water polo. The final wasM.S.E. Tg. Mures vs. ILSA Timişoara (score 4:0), hence the guys from our city won the Romania Cup. At that time, the team from Tîrgu Mureş was composed of Szígyártó, Vancea, Schwartz, Henselman, Kovács, Müller si Daróczi, some of them also taking part in swimming competitions at the same championship.
1934: In a somewhat déjá-vu final at the national championship, the team from Tîrgu Mureş won in a very tense match, with a final score of 3:2.
1943 - 1944: The team from Tîrgu Mureş took part in the Hungarian National Championship. The lineup was: Sándor, Sturtzer, Hámori, Kelemen, Daróczi, Kovács, Aranyosi, Ferencz, Lőrincz and Marosi.
1945: The magazine „Gazetă” mentions that in the town of Sovata a demonstrative friendly match took place between Dermagant Tg. Mureş and I.L.S.A.Timişoara. What made this a highly unusual match was the fact that it was played in the Lake „Ursu”, which has extremely salty water. It must have been quite a show...
1946-1958: Our town's water polo players have caused consistent furore at the National Championships, as they reached 2nd place a number of six time, five times were on 3rd place and once on 4th place.
1952: The Helsinki Olympic Games... The Romanian water polo team is eliminated in the 2nd round by the USA. with a 6:3 score. Among the Romanian players, we find Simon Ferenc, Kelemen Attila and Deák Gyula from Tîrgu Mureş.
1956: The Melbourne Olympic Games - Romania reached 8th place, Simon Ferenc from Tîrgu Mureş having been present in the team, together with Nagy, Deutsch, Bordy from same city.
1957: Progresul Tîrgu Mureş reaches 4th place in the national championship. The match between Progresul Mureş and C.C.A. Bucureşti was watched by 4000 people!
1960: The Rome Olympic Games - Romania reaches 5th place, our local talent Ferenc Simon being once more present in the team.
Over the years, several other players from this city have made their mark in the Romanian National Championships: Deák Gyula, dr. Rettegi Károly, dr. Kelemen Attila, Ferencz Zsigmond, Soli Fleşeriu, Fülöp György, Czimbalmos L., Fodor, Naska, dr.Veres, Rigó, dr. Meder, Gheorghe Pop, dr. Both, dr. Csiszér Ernő, Daróczi and others.
1961 - 1989: The last national competition medal won by this town's water polo teams was in 1983, when the children born in 1969-1970, among them notably Toth Ferenc-Miklos, achieved a bronze medal at the national championship.
Many personalities can be mentioned in this period, in random order, Tóth Ferenc Miklós, Fülöp Ferenc, Sós Árpád, Răzvan Păltineanu, Bartalis Károly, Láposi Győző, Meder jr., Szabó István, Fábián Sándor (Sada), Fülöp Tamás, Kis-Miki (Pancsó), Kiss Pali, Rettegi András, Rettegi István, Szász Karcsi, Barabás Csaba, Rettegi László, Harai István, Barabás János, Naum Sârbu, Dacher László and many others who spent most of their life in this time period in the pool 1 Mai.
1990 - 2011: The sport enters a long decay, followed by a very recent renaissance, after two decades of hibernation. The 1 Mai pool, seen above, also decays, by the arrival of the new century it is reduced to a state of total ruin.
But by the second decade of the new century, initially starting as the passionate dream of Răzvan Păltineanu, the clubs Torpi, then Aquasport, H2O and Minimax have truly brought the sport back in this town (they can be found among the links).
2011 - 2012: The girls' team from Torpi won national silver medal in 2012, with the interesting twist that mother and daughter played in the same team!
In the same year, after almost 26 years absence, the city was again represented at the national level by the Aquasport junior II boys' team (finishing in 5th place).
A key moment was the inauguration of the covered pool at the Weekend Complex, this established vital training facilities for water sports.
2013: The results showed quickly, the Torpi girls became national champions in 2013, and the Torpi women's team got silver medal in the same year at the national championship, both having been organised in this town.
So water polo truly returned here, apart from several qualifiers for many age groups' national championship were organised at the Weekend olympic pool, also the first Romania Cup for Masters was organised here in 2013. It was a superb event gathering many legends of Romanian and local water polo.
In September 2013, the Romania Cup in women's waterpolo was won by Torpi MS, so a local victory again. In same month, the women's national team of Romania was established, with around half of the players from Targu Mures!
The first international (friendly) match between the newly formed national squad and that of Slovakia was played at the Weekend Complex Olympic pool in the same city, on 22 September - with a victory of 9-8 for Romania. The first ever goal scored by the Romanian national team was that of Krisztina Szeghalmi, from Torpi MS - so Targu Mures water polo has truly wrote itself (again) into the history books!
2014: The series of successes continues: after more than three decades of absence, Tirgu Mures is again represented at the national championships' final tournaments in the Junior III age group via the Torpi MS team coached by Ferenc-Miklos Toth, and also in the children's age group via the Aquasport team coached by Razvan Paltineanu.
The Torpi MS junior girls have again become national champions, and the club's women's team has again grabbed the silver medal at the nationals held in Bucharest for both age groups.
2015: With the Junior 3 age group teams from Aquasport/Minimax and Torpi qualifying to the national championships, and a total of 5 players from these teams being selected for the national squad, water polo in Tirgu Mures has reached yet another step of recognition.
2018: The formation of the Municipal Sport Club, with the inclusion of water polo among its key departments, created another historic moment. The city now has, for the first time in decades, a senior water polo team. The department director is one of the city's water polo legends and international FINA referee, Ferenc Miklós Tóth. Coach Andrei Eduard from Bucharest brings the technical mentorship, and the team is composed of reserves from Steaua Bucharest plus a number of local players who were among the best former junior players in some of the city's water polo clubs.

Bucureşti, Oradea, Cluj, Tîrgu Mureş și Timișoara - acestea au fost orasele în care au aparut primele echipe de polo din țară, alcătuite în marea majoritate din înotatori.
1928 - găsim mențiunea primului joc oficial, între Oradea și Cluj.
1929: La Cluj s-a desfășurat un prim meci între două echipe de club: Universitatea - Maros Sport Egyesület (M.S.E.) Tg. Mureş (scor 8-6).
1933: Campionatele Naționale de Nataţie din Bucuresti. Finala a fost între M.S.E. Tg. Mures si ILSA (scor 4-0), mureșenii câștigând trofeul denumit "Cupa României". La M.S.E. jucau pe atunci Szígyártó, Vancea, Schwartz, Henselman, Kovács, Müller si Daróczi, unii participând și la competițiile de înot.
1934: Finala din 1933 s-a reeditat, succesul muresenilor (scor 3-2) fiind obţinut la capătul unei lupte îndârjite.
1943 - 1944: Echipa mureşeană M.S.E. a participat la Campionatul Naţional din Ungaria. Iată lotul: Sándor, Sturtzer, Hámori, Kelemen, Daróczi, Kovács, Aranyosi, Ferencz, Lőrincz şi Marosi.
1945: Din „Gazetă” aflăm că, în organizarea O.S.P.-ului, la Sovata s-a disputat meciul demonstrativ de polo dintre Dermagant Tg. Mureş şi I.L.S.A.Timişoara. Partida a avut loc pe Lacul „Ursu” din Sovata, un lac cu apă foarte sărată... deci probabil că a fost un meci extrem de interesant.
1946-1958: Poloiştii mureşeni au făcut furori în Campionatele Naţionale, reuşind să se claseze de 6 ori pe locul II, de 5 ori pe locul III şi o dată pe locul 4!
1952: La Helsinki, au loc Jocurile Olimpice de vară, la care echipa de polo a României este eliminată în turul II, de S.U.A., cu 6-3. Din lotul formaţiei noastre au făcut parte Simon Ferenc, Kelemen Attila şi Deák Gyula.
1956: La Melbourne, au loc Jocurile Olimpice de vară, competiţie sportivă la care echipa naţională de polo a României, din lotul căreia făcea parte şi mureşenii Simon Ferenc, Nagy, Deutsch, Bordy, a ocupat locul 8.
1957: Progresul Tg. Mureş – locul 4. La meciul Progresul Tg. Mureş - C.C.A. Bucureşti au asistat 4.000 de spectatori!
1960: La jocurile Olimpice de vară, de la Roma, echipa naţională de polo a României s-a clasat pe locul 5. Din echipa naţională a făcut parte şi poloistul Tîrgumureşean Simon Ferenc.
În Campionatele Naţionale ale României, de-a lungul anilor s-au mai remarcat şi alţi poloişti mureşeni: Deák Gyula, dr. Rettegi Károly, dr. Kelemen Attila, Ferencz Zsigmond, Soli Fleşeriu, Fülöp György, Czimbalmos L., Fodor, Naska, dr.Veres, Rigó, dr. Meder, Gheorghe Pop, dr. Both, dr. Csiszér Ernő, Daróczi şi alţii.
1961 - 1989: Ultima medalie câştigată de poloiştii mureşeni la nivel naţional în această perioadă a fost cea de bronz la campionatul naţional din 1983, de către copiii născuţi în 1969-1970 cu prezenţa notabilă a lui Toth Ferenc Miklos.
În această perioadă, este o listă lungă de personalităţi care se poate aminti, Tóth Ferenc Miklós, Fülöp Ferenc, Sós Árpád, Răzvan Păltineanu, Bartalis Károly, Láposi Győző, Meder jr., Szabó István, Fábián Sándor (Sada), Fülöp Tamás, Kis-Miki (Pancsó), Kiss Pali, Rettegi András, Rettegi István, Szász Karcsi, Barabás Csaba, Rettegi László, Harai István, Barabás János, Naum Sârbu, Dacher László şi mulţi alţii care și-au petrecut cea mai mare parte din viața lor în bazinul de la ștrandul 1 Mai.
1990 - 2011 : Polo pe apă intră într-o perioadă de declin in oraş, urmat de o foarte recentă renaştere după două decenii... Ştrandul 1 Mai, care se vede mai sus, intră şi el în declin, ajungând în stare de ruină la sosirea secolului XXI.
Dar când al doilea deceniu al noului secol a sosit, ceea ce a pornit la drum ca visul pasionat al lui Răzvan Păltineanu, a arătat semne concrete deja, cluburile Torpi, apoi Aquasport, H2O, Minimax au adus deja cu adevărat înapoi acest sport în oraş.
2011 - 2012: Echipa feminină de la Torpi a fost medaliată cu argint la nivel naţional în 2012, cu un fapt interesant: mama şi fiica juca în aceeaşi echipă!
În acelaşi an, după 26 de ani de absenţă, oraşul a fost reprezentat la campionatul naţional masculin de către echipa junior II de la Aquasport.
Un moment cheie a fost şi inaugurarea bazinului acoperit de la Complexul Weekend, care a asigurat condiţii vitale de antrenament pentru sporturile pe apă.
2013: Rezultatele continuă să se arate, fetele de la Torpi devin campioane naţionale în 2013, echipa de senioare devine vicecampioană naţională, şi amândouă turnee finale sunt organizate la Mureş.
Prima ediţie a Cupei României de Masters este organizat to la acel bazin, şi se întrunesc multe legende naţionale şi locale.
Deci putem spune că polo pe apă într-adevăr s-a întors în acest oraş...
În luna septembrie a aceluiaşi an, echipa de fete de la Torpi MS a câştigat Cupa României la polo feminin, şi acest turneu fiind organizat la Târgu Mureş.
Totodată, echipa naţională feminină a fost înfiinţată, şi primul meci internaţional jucat de aceasta a fost unul amical, tot la Târgu Mureş, cu echipa Slovaciei pe data de 22 septembrie.
Scorul a fost 9-8 pentru România, şi primul gol marcat de noua selecţionată a fost cel al lui Krisztina Szeghalmi de la Torpi MS - deci polo-ul mureşean iar s-a înscris în istoria acestui sport!
2014: Seria succeselor continua: după mai mult de trei decenii de absenţă, Târgu Mureş este din nou reprezentat la turneele finale ale campionatului naţional de Juniori III, totodată şi la cel de copii, prin echipele cluburilor Torpi (antrenată de Ferenc-Miklós Tóth) şi Aquasport (antrenată de Răzvan Păltineanu).
Junioarele de la Torpi MS au devenit încă o dată campioane naţionale, iar echipa de senioare vicecampioane la Bucureşti.
2015: Cu juniorii 3 de la Aquasport/Minimax și Torpi calificați la turneul final al campionatului național, și cu 5 jucători de la aceste cluburi fiind selectați în lotul național, se poate spune că polo-ul mureșean a mai făcut încă un pas spre recunoaștere națională.
2018: Formarea Clubului Municipal, cu o secție de polo pe apă printre altele, creează încă un moment istoric. Orașul, pentru prima oară după multe decenii, are din nou o echipă de seniori. Președintele secției de polo este unul din legendele poloului, totodată și arbitru internațional FINA, Tóth Ferenc Miklós. Antrenorul Andrei Eduard de la București este mentorul tehnic al seniorilor, echipa fiind formată din rezerviști de la Steaua plus jucători locali care au fost printre cei mai talentați juniori de la unele din cluburile de la Tîrgu Mureș.

Bukarest, Nagyvárad, Kolozsvár, Marosvásárhely és Temesvár – ezen városokban alakultak meg az első hazai vízilabda csapatok, nagy részben úszókból álltak össze.
1928-ban kerül sor az első hivatalos meccsre, ahol Nagyvárad és Kolozsvár találkozott.
1929: Kolozsváron került sor a vásárhelyiek első meccsére. A kolozsvári egyetem klubcsapata 8-6 arányban győzte le a Maros Sport Egyesület (M.S.E.) csapatát.
1933: Bukaresti Országos Úszóbajnokság – a vízilabda döntőben a marosvásárelyi M.S.E. játszott a temesvári ILSA ellen, 4-0-ás győzelemmel kiérdemelve a Románia Kupát. Akkoriban az M.S.E. csapatában játszott Szígyártó, Vancea, Schwartz, Henselman, Kovács, Müller és Daróczi, közülük többen a bajnkoság úszóversenyein is részt vettek.
1934: Az 1933-as döntő sztorija megismétlődött, a vásárhelyiek 3-2-re nyertek egy kemény meccsben.
1943 - 1944: A vásárhelyi M.S.E. a magyar országos bajnokságban vett részt, a csapatban Sándor, Sturtzer, Hámori, Kelemen, Daróczi, Kovács, Aranyosi, Ferencz, Lőrincz şi Marosi játszott.
1945: A „Gazetă” újságban említik, hogy Szovátán egy sport bemutató keretében egy barátságos meccsen a vásárhelyi Dermagant és a temesvári I.L.S.A. találkozott. Nos, a mérkőzést a Medve tóban játszották, így tekintve a tó vizének magas sótartalmát, rendkívül érdekes látvány lehetett...
1946-1958: A vásárhelyi pólósok az országos bajnokságokban hatszor második, ötször harmadik és egyszer negyedik helyen végeztek.
1952: A Helsinki-ben megrendezett Olimpián Románia vízilabda csapatát a második fordulóban az Egyesült Államok csapata győzte le, 6-3-mal. A válogatottban marosvásárhelyől Simon Ferenc, KelemenAttila és Deák Gyula játszott.
1956: A Melbourne-i Olimpián négy vásárhelyi játszott a román válogatottban (Simon Ferenc, Nagy, Bordy és Deutsch), nyolcadik helyen végeztek.
1957: Az országos bajnokságokban Progresul Marosvásárhely negyedik helyen végzett. A ProgresulMarosvásárhely - C.C.A. Bukarest meccsen 4000 szurkoló volt jelen.
1960: A római Olimpián a román válogatott ötödik helyen végzett, a csapatban a vásárhelyi Simon Ferenc is játszott.
A romániai országos bajnokságokon az évek során sok más marosvásárhelyi pólós emelkedett ki: Deák Gyula, dr. Rettegi Károly, dr. Kelemen Attila, Ferencz Zsigmond, Soli Fleşeriu, Fülöp György, Czimbalmos L., Fodor, Naska, dr.Veres, Rigó, dr. Meder, Gheorghe Pop, dr. Both, dr. Csiszér Ernő, Daróczi és mások.
1961 - 1989: Ezen periódusban a helyi vízilabdások által utolsó országos szinten elnyert érem az 1983-as országos bajnokságon kivívott bronz, amelyet az 1969-1970-es születésű gyerekek nyertek (többek között Tóth Ferenc Miklóssal).
Sok nevet lehet említeni ezen időszakból is: Tóth Ferenc Miklós, Fülöp Ferenc, Sós Árpád, Răzvan Păltineanu, Bartalis Károly, Láposi Győző, Meder jr., Szabó István, Fábián Sándor (Sada), Fülöp Tamás, Kis-Miki (Pancsó), Kiss Pali, Rettegi András, Rettegi István, Szász Karcsi, Barabás Csaba, Rettegi László, Harai István, Barabás János, Naum Sârbu, Dacher László akik úgymond a életük jó részét a Május 1 strandon töltötték.
1990 - 2011: A városban a vízilabda hanyatlása következett be, majd húsz év után a sport újraéledése kezdődik el. A fent látható Május 1 strand is hanyatlásnak indul, a XXI. évszázad beköszöntésekor romokban áll.
De az új évszázad második évtizedére a kezdetben Răzvan Păltinean szenvedélyes álmaként indult újjáéledés jeleiként már a Torpi, majd az Aquasport és H2O, Minimax klubok vízilabda szakosztályai (mint a linkek oldalán megtalálhatjuk) a sportot igazából visszahozták a városba.
2011 - 2012 : A Torpi lánycsapata országos ezüst érmet szerzett, külön érdekesség volt az, hogy anya és lánya együtt játszott a csapatban.
Ugyanazon évben pedig az Aquasport ifi II-es fiúcsapata által 26 év után először a város jelen volt az országos férfi bajnokság döntő turnéján (ötödik helyezést érve el).
Kulcsmozzanat a 2012-es felavatása a Víkendtelep fedett medencéjének, ezzel megteremtve létfontosságú edzési lehetőségeket a vízisportok számára.
2013: Az eredmények továbbra is megmutatkoznak, a Torpi lányok országos bajnokok 2013-ban és a női csapat ezüst érmes, mindkét országos bajnokság döntő turnéja a Víkendtelep olimpiai medencéjében zajlott.
Az első Masters Románia Kupát is itt szervezték, ahol az ország sok polós legendája gyűlt össze. Így a vízilabda valóban igazán visszatért a városba...
Azon év szeptemberében a női vízilabda Románia Kupát Marosvásárhelyen rendezték meg, és a Torpi MS ifi csapata nyerte meg a Kupát.
Ugyanakkor a női nemzeti válogatott is megalakult, amelynek fele a Torpi marosvásárhelyi lányjátékosainak sorából került ki.
E válogatott csapat első nemzetközi (barátságos) meccse a szlovák válogatott ellen játszódott szept. 22-ikén, Románia csapata 9-8-ra győzve.
A válogatott első gólját a marosvásárhelyi Torpi játékosa, Szeghalmi Krisztina dobta - így a város ismét alaposan beírta magát a sport történelmébe!
2014: A sikerek sorozata folytatódik: több mint három évtized hiányzás után Marosvásárhely ismét jelent van az országos Ifi III és gyerek bajnokságok döntő fordulóiban, a Tóthi Ferenc-Miklós által edzett Torpi és a Răzvan Păltineanu által edzett Aquasport csapata révén.
A Torpi lánycsapata ismét országos bajnok lett és a női csapat pedig elnyerte az ezüstöt a Bukarestben egyidőben tartott országos bajnokságon.
2015: Az ifi III-as Aquasport-Minima ás Torpi csapatok országos bajnokság döntő fordulójába való bejutásával, és ezen klubok összesen 5 játékosának válogatottba való kiválasztásával el lehet mondani, hogy a vásárhelyi vízilabda elismerésének újabb lépcsőfoka valósult meg.
2018: A Városi Sportklub megalakulása, többek között egy vízilabda szakosztállyal is, ismét történelmi pillanatot jelent. Több évtized után a városnak ismét van felnőtt vízilabda csapata. A szakosztály elnöke a vízilabda legenda és nemzetközi FINA bíró, Tóth Ferenc Miklós. A bukaresti Andrei Eduard edzőé a technikai mentor szerepe, a csapat a Steaua tartalékosaiból és helyi játékosokból áll, akik egyes vásárhelyi ifi vízilabda klubok tehetségei voltak.
